Wire Harness Production
Electrical wire harnesses are organized groups of cords that transmit signals or electrical power in a vast range of products, equipment, vehicles, and machinery. Harnesses play a critical role in modern electronics by providing a structured, organized, and efficient way to connect various components and functions within a device or system, enhancing functionality and reliability while simplifying assembly, maintenance, and repair.
The components of a harness assembly range in varying sizes and types:
- Wires or Cables
Wire harnesses consist of multiple individual wires or cables. These wires are typically color-coded or labeled to facilitate easier identification and connection by technicians.
- Connectors
Wire harnesses include connectors at specific points within the assembly. These connectors match the connections needed for the components or devices they are connecting. Connectors come in various types, including plugs, sockets, and terminals.
- Terminals
Terminals are connectors placed at the end of a wire or wires in a harness. The size and shape vary based on the desired function, but can include rings, spades, hooks, quick-connect/disconnect, and bullets.
- Insulation
The wires within a harness are typically insulated to prevent electrical shorts and protect against environmental factors such as moisture, heat, and abrasion. The type of insulation used depends on the application and environmental conditions.
- Protective Covering
Harnesses may be wrapped in protective tape or enclosed in a protective loom, which is a flexible, plastic, or fabric covering that helps protect the wires from damage and keeps the wires organized and secure.
- Color-coded, imprinted wires and cables
- Connectors: plugs and sockets, strategically positioned for ease of connection.
- Insulation: coatings, coverings, etc., selected according to purpose and environmental conditions to prevent short-circuiting and prevent damage from moisture, heat, abrasion, and other environmental factors.
- Taping or loom: Harnesses may be wrapped in protective tape or enclosed in a protective loom, which is a flexible covering made of plastic or fabric. Looms help protect wires while keeping them organized and secure.
There is a reason wire harnesses are used so widely in electronics manufacturing worldwide. In fact, there are many reasons. Here are just a few of the benefits to be gained by using wire harnessing in electronics:
